Generally, the serving size should be taken on a relatively empty stomach. For some, this can be an hour or two after a meal. Some people may also fare better with taking it well before eating, for example first thing in the morning, 30+ minutes prior to breakfast. It can be split into 2 separate doses throughout the day if desired.

The reasoning for this is because bile salts are highly alkaline, and are excreted into the intestine after our food has been acidified by stomach acid. The combination between the acidified food, and the alkaline bile salts are what create the digestion of food, fats, and absorption of vitamins (think of adding baking soda to vinegar). We want to wait to give the food enough time to be acidified, before adding in the alkaline bile salts. However, each person is different, and therefore we recommend each person find their optimal dosing and timing methods.

Healing my liver I’m currently 4 months postpartum and when I was 2 months postpartum I found out I have elevated liver enzymes and started to feel pressure in my liver area. I’m still waiting on an ultrasound to see what is actually going on in there BUT we have been monitoring my liver enzymes over the last two months. I started TUDCA, 500mg twice a day, probably a week or so after my pain started. My tests were trending down which was great. About 6 weeks after starting TUDCA I ran out and my delivery of my next bottle was delayed. I was out for about 3.5 days and on that last day I had bloodwork done again. My liver enzymes had gone back up, even further than the first test I had taken. I got back on my TUDCA, my pain started to go away again (I do still have SOME but it’s easily ignored and not all the time) and after another two weeks we tested my enzymes again. THEY DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY! One was finally in normal range and the second was much lower than before and even lower than the first test I took. This is an expensive supplement, I’m spending about $100/mo to have it, but if it helps me to keep my gallbladder (I still don’t know if that’s the actual issue or not) and helps me liver to recover after this very hard postpartum then I will keep spending the money because it’s worth it. It hasn’t been a quick fix but consistency and patience has been proving to pay off. I think my doctor thought I was a little loony when I mentioned at my last follow-up that I thought my enzymes were up because I was out of my supplement for a couple days LOL boy I hope she learned a lesson after seeing my last lab work!
